Short Bio and Artist Statement

The arts, in general, are an opportunity for people to make sense of and reflect on the world that we live in and share their interpretation with others. Among other things, my roles as a former art teacher and now an elementary school teacher have helped to shape the way I see art and its social power as a visual language. When I teach art it is always about using what you know about the world and yourself and focusing that knowledge into something that is accessible to the viewer.
My connection with collage started in 2003 as a necessity based on the care taking of my son. Few times were available to retire into a traditional studio-type environment and so I began working with a medium that was readily available in the living room. The inspiration just started to flow as I began a series of pieces based on memories and snapshots of my life. Each piece represents an event or experience drawn up from past or present. These stories of family and friends, during the best and worst times, offer a glimpse into my life and hopefully, connect with yours as well.
I have veered away from the emphasis on “memories” lately and leaned towards more disjointed pieces based on inspiration from a conversation, good idea, or whatever else seems to come my way. These pieces have taken on a new style as well. While I used to use the actual images found in the magazines, I seem to be moving more and more towards choosing sections for their pure color and working from there.
My materials are fairly simple. Usually just scissors, glue sticks, and a variety of magazines. The magazines vary depending on what I am after, but fashion magazines and art magazines do tend to have the most interesting textures and colors.
Hope you enjoy them!
